The Eric and Wendy Schmidt AI in Science Postdoctoral Fellowship was established in October 2022, with the University of Oxford being one of the nine research universities chosen to host the programme. Following the recruitment of ten Fellows in 2023, this year sees the addition of 15 more talented individuals, including Jan Christoph Thiele.

Jan Christoph's project, titled ‘From noise to knowledge: deep learning for weak signal analysis in ultra-sensitive microscopy and beyond’, focuses on enhancing Mass Photometry (MP), a microscopy technique crucial in biochemical and pharmaceutical research. By leveraging deep learning methodologies and AI tools, Jan Christoph aims to overcome current limitations of MP, paving the way for groundbreaking discoveries at the single-molecule level.

The Schmidt AI in Science programme, known for its cross-disciplinary approach, spans the breadth of the Mathematical, Physical and Life Sciences (MPLS) Division at Oxford. It fosters collaboration between different domains of AI and provides comprehensive training to non-AI specialists, enabling them to integrate AI techniques into their research fields effectively.

Moreover, as part of the Fellowship, Jan Christoph and his peers at Oxford will have the opportunity to become Associate Research Fellows at Reuben College, Oxford's newest interdisciplinary College. Founded in 2019, Reuben College aims to foster interdisciplinary collaboration and drive initiatives with broader societal impacts.

Jan Christoph Thiele's selection as an Eric and Wendy Schmidt AI in Science Postdoctoral Fellow is a testament to his talent and the innovative nature of his research. Kavli Oxford extends its heartfelt congratulations to Jan Christoph and wishes him every success in his fellowship.
