On-surface Synthesis of Atomically Precise Polymers and Real Space Imaging of the Sigma Hole by means of Scanning Probe Microscopy

In the last years, scanning probe microscopy has enabled the on-site study of the physical and chemical properties of single molecules on the atomic level. In the interface between a well-defined crystal and the vacuum, the reduction of symmetry of the crystal opens a playground for the exploration of exotic and novel properties of molecules.
The two-dimensional confinement of molecules introduces novel pathways for atomically precise on- surface polymerizations [1], planarization by kinetic control of strained molecules [2], the study of electronic and magnetic properties of polymers [3], and the exploration of non-covalent interactions [4].
In this talk, I will introduce the role of the surface for driving chemical reactions, otherwise impossible or had to perform in wet chemistry and the capabilities of non- contact atomic force microscopy (nc-AFM) to characterize, in the atomic scale, non- covalent interactions such as the real-space visualization of the sigma hole [4].
