Wade-Martins Group Attain Gold Sustainability Award

Kavli Oxford's Wade-Martins Group has achieved a Laboratory Efficiency Assessment Framework (LEAF) Gold award in recognition of its sustainable practices – the first lab to achieve the top award within the Department of Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics (DPAG).

The Award was presented by Professor Irene Tracey at the Bodleian Libraries, Divinity School, as part of the Vice-Chancellor’s Environmental Sustainability Awards event on Tuesday 20 June 2023, along with DPAG’s Cragg Group, who were awarded a Bronze certificate.

LEAF is the world’s largest green lab programme, empowering researchers to implement sustainable practices. Using the framework, each lab assesses its current practices and chooses to aim for the Bronze, Silver or Gold awards. A lab on LEAF can save on average £3,799 and approximately 3 tonnes of CO2e per year.

The Wade-Martins Group were previously successful with being awarded the Silver level in July 2022. A number of improvement areas were further identified to reach the Gold level of achievement. 

Professor Richard Wade-Martins said, “I am thrilled that the Group has been recognised for its exemplary sustainable practices and achieved the Gold award – the first lab to achieve this level across DPAG. Congratulations and well done to everyone involved, especially to DPhil student, Féodora Bertherat, and Research Manager, Dr Sarah Pearce, who led on the process on behalf of the Group.”
